The judge who presided over the trial of Larry Nassar, a former USA Gymnastics National Team doctor convicted on multiple child molestation charges was in town today.

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina was the keynote speaker at today’s Corpus Christi Bar Association’s Law Day.

Aquilina spoke to a roomful of judges and attorneys about the U.S. justice system.

One of the main points Aquilina stressed was the importance of listening. She said that if just one person would have listened to Nassar’s first victim, the abuse would have stopped there.

“That should not have been my case,” Aquilina said. “If one person 30 years ago would have listened, hundreds would have been spared. We need to listen, believe and take meaningful action, and now we have a huge task ahead to change our culture of silence.”

KRIS 6 News’ Katia Uriarte was the emcee at today’s event.
