CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Refugio pitcher Jared Kelley was selected in the second round of Wednesday's Major League Baseball Draft by the Chicago White Sox.

He was selected as the 47th overall pick.

Kelley, a 6-foot-3, 230-pounder, hails from the same town that was the birthplace of legendary Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan.

If Kelley, 18, doesn't agree on his pro contract, he has signed a baseball scholarship at the University of Texas.

Kelley becomes the second Coastal Bender to be picked in the MLB Draft. Former Ray standout and current Baylor shortstop Nick Loftn was picked by the Kansas City Royals Wednesday night in the first round.

Kelley's senior season in high school was cut short by the pandemic this spring.
