CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Later former Ray standout and current Baylor shortstop Nick Loftin was selected with the 32nd pick by the Kansas City Royals.

Loftin follows in the footsteps of former Ray pitcher Calvin Adams, who was taken first in 1977 by the Montreal Expos in the January draft, which was second at the time.

Both players had their seasons cut short by the pandemic this spring.

Loftin was projected to be the Big 12 Player of the Year before the season by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. He has a career batting average of .321 with the Bears and 14 career homers.

While in college he has matured into a solid power hitter after adding 30 pounds of muscle since high school.
