CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The road to the girls high school basketball state tournament starts today for several area schools.

The majority will play tomorrow and we have several teams who have a good chance to go deep in the playoffs

Including the Carroll Lady Tigers, District 30-5A champions.

The Lady Tigers will open the playoffs at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Laredo Cigarroa in Alice.

Carroll lost just one district game and have been state ranked all season with a 29-5 record.

They are certainly battled tested with so many good players on this team.

They have 12 seniors, so they are built to win big this year.

There’s lots of excitement surrounding this group of very talented young ladies

This team will be tough to beat in the post season.

“Me and my whole team are confident we can go very far because of how strong we are together and all of our experience,” Carroll guard Clara Garcia said. “We shoot the ball really well and we have great post players. We can shoot outside, if not we can go inside and get the job done.”

Carroll guard Maya Simon said the Lady Tigers’ unity will help them as their season progresses.

“I believe we have a good coach and good teammates,” Simon said. “We work together and not against each other. Our coaches work us hard every day.”

Carroll coach Leticia Canales said her team’s experience will be a benefit in the playoffs.

“I think one advantage we have is that we have been there,” Canales said. “With this group with so many seniors, a couple of them have been to the regional tournament and we have played at this playoff level.

“The experience factor, you can't teach that. Either you have it or you don't and we have the experience.”

They certainly do with 12 seniors.

It’s a very balanced team that can beat you in so many ways.

Good luck to them and all of our other area teams in the playoffs.
