CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — 91-year-old Dotson Lewis was a referee for 71 years until he retired two years ago.
Today, he became only the third sports official in Texas history to be presented the Sam Brown Award.
It's the highest honor awarded by the football division of the Texas Association of Sports Officials.
“My wife, who supported me greatly for 60 something years, really appreciated the fact that I would go and work, come home and I didn't let things bother me,” Lewis said. “I told her about the game and it was just a thrill because something new happened every game really.”
And even at the ripe age of 91, Lewis still teaches a class on sports officiating.
