After back to back seasons of losing in the third round of the high school basketball playoffs, London coach Ron Lawver is ready to make the big leap.

“We’ve gotten to the third round two years in a row,” Lawver said. “So this group really wants to pass that hump and get to the fourth round.”

And this really could be the year they finally do it. Led by a veteran group of seniors and talented crop of juniors, this team feels as if its experience could be is going to be its biggest advantage.

“We had four starters return this year and maybe other teams might not have that,” forward Grant Glasson said.

London (16-8, 3-0 in district play) is ranked 15th among Class 3A teams in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ weekly poll. And for the Pirates this season, overcoming that dreaded third round is not an option.

“We have to get to the regional tournament,” Coach Lawver said. “We have the team this year and I think we are ready to do it.”

The Pirates will play Santa Getrudis Academy Friday at home.
