CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Veterans Memorial defeated Miller in a pulsating Friday Night Fever Game last Friday.

The game ran a little late and we were unable to show you the post-game trophy presentation with the Eagles during the Fever broadcast.

Congratulations to the Veterans Memorial Eagles as they open their season with a big 57-35 victory over the Miller Bucs and in doing so earn the Thomas J. Henry Friday Night Fever Game of the Week Trophy.

Veterans quarterback Carter Senterfitt shrugged off any accolades, despite the victory.

“We had a lot of mistakes,” Senterfitt said. “If you didn't play for us you would not really know, but yes, the scoreboard showed we scored and had some good breaks but we have some things to work on.”

Veterans coach Cody Simper said his team’s performance was atypical of a first game of the season.

"We didn't make any mistakes that you make typically early on in the season,” Simper said. “That is what I am most proud about. And our kids did a really good job of taking care of the football.

“But Miller is a heck of a football team and this was a non-district game and (Miller) coach (Justen) Evans and myself are looking to find ways to get better. I think both teams will be better because of the matchup like this one."
