SAN ANTONIO, Tx. — Veterans Memorial defeated San Antonio Southwest on 55-7 Saturday in the 5A-1 regional semifinal.
With that win, the Eagles advance to the regional final of the state football playoffs.
The game did not start as the Eagles planned after Carter Senterfitt was picked off and the Dragons responded with a long touchdown run by running back Andre Mitchell.
Senterfitt was intercepted in the ensuing possession and the Dragons had an opportunity to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
The Eagles defense stopped the Dragons on 4th down their next drive and that led to a long Eagles' drive resulting in a Senterfitt Touchdown run.
With the game tied at seven, Senterfitt scored again to give the Eagles their first lead of the game.
The turning point of the game was a Veterans Memorial blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown to increase their lead to 21-7.
The Eagles led the game 35-7 at halftime.
