CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Veterans Memorial plays Cedar Park in the Class 5A Division I state semi-final tonight at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio.
It has been 57 years since a CCISD team has made it this far in the football playoffs. Miller advanced to the state championship game in 1963.
Veterans Memorial players are very excited to be carrying the torch from Region IV, especially when you consider all the distractions and issues from the COVID-19 pandemic.
"A lot of us got together before the season started and began to make a plan," said Eagles defensive back Jabez Hudson. "We all made group chats and didn't let anyone outwork us. We were not sure if we would even have a season but we made sure we were prepared just in case. Now it's paying off."
Limited off-season conditioning and no preseason scrimmages made it tough on preparing for the season but all the pieces of the puzzle have come together so far.
"It's been a difficult year and we know that," Eagles coach Cody Simper said. "Other teams are also dealing with the same set of circumstances, so there's no advantage or disadvantage. It's just a matter of how our kids have handled it."
Both Vets Memorial and Cedar Park enter the state semi-final undefeated at 13-0.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
The winner advances to next week's championship game against the winner of the Denton Ryan-Mansfield Summit game also being played tonight.
The state championship game will be played next week at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
