BISHOP, Texas — This week's high school spotlight is on Bishop High School, as the Badgers gear up to host the Thomas J. Henry Gameday South Texas Saturday Night Football game.
The students at Bishop High School pride themselves on being a welcoming group, an example set by their whole community.
"The town, everybody is so supportive, from students to parents to community members, people that don't even have children here come and try to help out,” said Bishop principal Andi Kuyatt.
Residents make up advisory committees for the high school, and volunteer with FFA and school ag programs. People even come in and grill for the kids on game days.
And what Bishop High School is most known for, is how good these kids are.
The high school’s 525 students are known for their character in the classroom, and it reflects in their grades.
"English did well,” Kuyatt said. “Our biology, our U.S. history, our A.P. testers, we had 70 and 75 percent passing rates on the A.P. exams."
Bishop even used its outstanding STAR scores as a baseline, not a growth line.
"We're super proud of our academics,” Kuyatt said. “We were an A-rated campus and i think, even more importantly, we were a rated off of student achievement."
This includes on the field and the court for the student athletes, too.
"Our football team gives 120 percent all the time,” Kuyatt said. “And I believe the coaches have their best interest at heart and we are definitely looking forward to a great game on Saturday.”
