REFUGIO, Texas — The excitement is building for the Refugio Bobcats, who are just one win shy of another state title.
They are heading to the Class 2A Division I championship game Wednesday night at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. They will face off against the Post Antelopes in a match-up of two 15-0 teams. It will be the fourth consecutive game where the Bobcats will be facing an undefeated opponent.
Refugio is coming off a stirring 29-21 victory over San Augustine in a game we broadcast live on KDF-TV.
The Bobcats' defense has been playing strong all season.
And on offense, they have developed a very balanced attack, something Coach Jason Herring says you have to have if you want to win it all.
“That’s why I always believe you have to be able to throw and run the football,” Herring said. “I just don't know if you can win the big games doing only one thing.
“There will be a time like in the Shiner game where we had to throw it and score, and get down there quick. Three minutes left and we are down 13 points, there isn't time to run it so you have to be able to throw it.
“But the other night, we had the lead and if we can churn out about five first downs we can win it. So we pounded the rock, that's why we go in every season and try to be 50-50 and be as good at running as we can and good at passing.”
Post’s balanced team has caught the attention of Refugio running back/linebacker Ysidro Mascorro.
“They are 15-0 for a reason … they do everything right,” Mascorro said. “We just have to do everything right.
“We have to practice right every time. It's in our blood, if we don't get the job done the year before we start working right after. It's all about complete work all the time.”
Wednesday’s game shapes up as a classic matchup. Undefeated versus undefeated for a state title.
The game will kick off at 7 p.m. Fox Sports Southwest will have the game broadcast
