CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The UIL District 29-5A high school track and field meet ended on Thursday with the top four finishers in each event advancing to Area. The Flour Bluff boys and Gregory-Portland girls won the team titles at Cabaniss Field.

The girls 100 meter dash featured an impressive final heat, but it was Carroll's freshman Ta'Niya Davenport who gold in 12.32 seconds. Flour Bluff junior Margaret Croft was close behind. It was an awesome win for Davenport, followed by a team celebration.

"It was amazing. Knew I had that support system to cheer me on. It was awesome," Davenport, Carroll freshman sprinter, said. "Whenever I was getting in my blocks I knew I had to push myself all the way to the finish line, and I knew the competition that was next to me so I knew I had to give it everything I had."

The boys 100 meter dash was led by Flour Bluff senior Zachary DeWalt. The Air Force Academy signee ran a time of 10.48 seconds, tying his personal best.

"More towards the end of the race I felt my legs open up a little bit more," DeWalt, said. "I felt like I was just picking up speed."

The Hornets continued their dominance in the sprint relay, finishing under 43 seconds. In fact, the boys swept all three relays.

On the girls side, Gregory-Portland won the 4x100 relay, over a second faster than the second finisher Carroll, but it was the Lady Tigers freshman that brought home gold in the 800 meter run. Elaina Lucido crossed the line in 2:23.43 seconds. As a freshman she loves pushing herself against the upperclassmen.

"Makes me set a goal to like try and catch them, and to at least stay with them too when they're really fast," Lucido said.

In the boys 800 meters, Flour Bluff's Elijah Gonzales made it look easy in 1:57.81 seconds. Over 3 seconds faster than the second place finisher.

In the boys 110 meter hurdles, Veterans Memorial's Temoc Zamora ran a smooth race in 14.58 seconds.

King high school took control of the mile run. After the first lap senior Jackson Lovvorn took the lead. The University of Houston signee ran for 4:28.72 seconds followed by his teammate Diego Cantu. The two Mustangs also finished on top in the 2 mile. Lovvorn is now a 3-time district champion in both distance events.

"I mean even my teammate Diego we've placed first and second for the past couple of years in the district, so I thing I've got a friend along the way," Lovvorn said. "No, I know I've gotten a friend along the way. A life friend, and we've just built up a really good culture around King."

On day one of the track and field meet, Gregory-Portland senior and University of Kansas commit Madison Snody broke the district pole vault record by clearing 13 feet 7.5 inches.
