CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — "Bourg knows basketball."

That's the title on the Flour Bluff boys basketball yearbook page in 1993. Mike Bourg, the head coach for the Hornets, getting all the attention.

The Bourg family knows basketball, seemingly everyone knows it and that holds true at Flour Bluff even 26 years later in 1994. Brandon Bourg, Mike Bourg's son, is the head coach at the Bluff.

"Even as a young person I was able to connect myself and felt like I had a little bit of Flour Bluff in me," Brandon Bourg said.

You might call it a family tradition: coaching at Flour Bluff.

"When I was filling out my paperwork, one of the ladies from the central office said 'you know I've been here so long I know your dad,'" Brandon said.

For his dad, it allows him to stop by practices, coming back to the school where he experienced great success.

"I was excited when he signed," Mike said. "This is such a good community and a great school with great leadership."

It's a father-son bond that goes deeper than just the connection of coaching at Flour Bluff High School.

It's a father-son bond that is deeply rooted in basketball.

"We talk after every game for sure and leading up to games we talk at least once or twice a week leading into a game," continued Brandon.

"It's really really special," said Leslee Bourg, Mike's wife and Brandon's mom. "Not many people have the opportunity first of all to have such a good role model as his dad but both as a father figure and a coach."

Bourg knew basketball in 1994.

Players have come and gone in the Flour Bluff program. And once again in 2020, Bourg knows basketball; not much has changed.
