Odem readies for tough looming showdown against Aransas Pass

There are a lot of good teams in the area. But this Friday’s 3A showdown between Odem and Aransas Pass might be our most highly anticipated games so far this season.

Friday’s Class 3A game will feature two top 25 programs when the Panthers travel to Odem for the key district game.

The Owls are currently 16-9 and are unbeaten in district play after an impressive triumph over Mathis last night. They are ranked 18th in the TABC 3A state rankings.

With nine seniors, this Odem team is as experienced as any in the Coastal Bend and in the state. Coach Tony Ramirez knows this group will have a challenge Friday against Aransas Pass, but his team will be ready.

“We’re gonna have to shoot the ball extremely,” Ramirez said. “I think we have enough ball handlers and shooters to be able to do that and that is the only we are going to be successful against them Friday night.

“We are obviously going to have to take care of the ball, limit our turnovers and then do a good job of getting the ball to the rim and hitting open shots.”

Odem senior forward Spencer Bigner says his team’s depth and experience will be handy in the upcoming game.

“We have a lot of experience,” Bigner said. “We have a lot of seniors on this team. We lack a lot of size, but we make up for it with toughness, quickness, scrappiness and just our shooting.”

Outside shooting will be pivotal in Friday’s game, according to Odem senior guard Matthew Ramirez.

“We know they are a really good team, but as long as we keep up with them and do what we do – score the ball outside the perimeter – we’ll be good,” Ramirez said.

We’ll have a report from Aransas Pass players and coaches tomorrow.
