The Keach Family Library remains closed, as do the rest of the Nueces County Public Libraries during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they are still playing a vital part in helping the community get back on its feet.

With the help of a $50,000 grant from the CARES Act, the county libraries have paired with a company called Brainfuse to help people get back to work and upgrade their careers.

"At its core, we're providing access to a live tutor seven days a week, nine hours a day," said Brainfuse Director of Library Services Jack Rothstein.

Brainfuse has two different aspects of the service. The first is a tutoring service for students of all ages. It is absolutely free.

"Not every family can afford a private tutor," Rothstein said. "Through the library subscription there is a tutor on-call seven days a week."

The other aspect of the service is all about getting those who are out of work back into a job.

"There is a job coach, a résumé coach, an interview coach," Rothstein said. "I can upload my résumé to the résumé lab, and within 24 hours it will be critiqued and sent back to me with suggestions."

Like the tutoring service, this is 100 percent free. For those in Nueces county looking to gain access, all you need is one thing.

"You need a Nueces County library card, and you can apply for one on our website," said Crystal Drillen, the assistant director of library services.

Brainfuse also helps veterans, a large portion of the Coastal Bend population.

"They can also subscribe to our vet service, which supports veterans and their families," Rothstein said. "There is access to a VA benefits navigator."
