CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — COVID-19 has made finding a job a little more difficult, but as we reported last week, there are more than 5,000 jobs available in the Coastal Bend.
"Some of the timelines have looked a little different -- some of the application deadlines have been extended," said A&M-Corpus Christi's Director of Career ServicesLeslie Mills. "And the majority of the interviews have moved just virtual or phone interview."
Whether you are a graduate or looking to get back into the workforce, there are plenty of opportunities.
The Corpus Christi Independent School District recently had its first virtual job fair.
"We had over 130 interviews that day that were held by campus administrators over Skype," said CCISD's Human Resources Director Debbie Nunez.
Nunez said the district will make 70 job offers just in this week.
While people hunt for the right job position, it is important to remember what it takes to land the right job. Starting with advice and tips for a good interview.
As an employer, Nunez said she looks for three things from applicants:
- How much do they know about the company?
- Did they research on the job position?
- What did they bring to the table to help them stand apart from the competition?
Nunez said it's all about "becoming familiar with the position." The district was hiring teachers in its last job fair.
When doing research on the company and job position, Mills has some advice.
"A lot of the research you can find on the job posting, just looking for some keywords in that job posting," she said. "Thinking about how you have that skill or how you display that skill."
Nunez said when presenting yourself during an interview, make sure you limit distractions and come prepared.
Also, check your surroundings for a proper background and of course, dress for success.
Mills also said to personalize your resume to each job position, and make sure you know your resume completely.
"So just really knowing your résumé so that you can really be prepared to answer any questions that might come from your résumé," she said.
