SINTON, Texas — Although their doors were shuttered for six months toward the start of 2020, volunteers at New Beginnings Fellowship are continuing to offer free clothing to those in need.

The organization’s Community Clothing Closet event opens on the last Saturday of every month. Lucinda Blasingame with New Beginnings Fellowship said the clothing giveaway started out three years ago with two small closets, but eventually graduated to encompassing a whole building. “There’s nowhere for people to go if they need clothing on their backs,” Blasingame, a Sinton resident, said. “We’re about 30 minutes from the next place that you can go and purchase something if you needed to buy clothing, and if you didn’t have the means to do that — you’re kind of out of luck.” Blasingame said they have been assisting anywhere from 30 to 40 different households.

“With the coronavirus, the need only grew,” she said. “People started losing jobs. People started losing wages. And this was a place where that need of extra clothing or extra toiletries could be met. So they came — and they kept coming.”

The organization’s community closet is from 9 a.m to 12 p.m. on the last Saturday of every month at 121 South McCall St. in Sinton. New Beginnings Fellowship does not require any personal information. Those interested in making a monetary donation can visit their website. Blasingame asks those who want to donate any clothing to contact them first.
