CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Today’s We’re Open segment takes us to The Chicken Shack, home of that famous chicken sign on Interstate 37.
You know I enjoy covering sports but I also like my fried chicken.
The Chicken Shack has been here for 14 years and has been locally owned since 1939.
And there’s the famous chicken sign. In fact, it’s part of a “Billboard's” Hall of Fame in Austin.
“The sign has been really good to us," owner Michael Berry said. "People can be driving down I-37 75 mph and see it. I can remember seeing it for the first time in 1965 near Buc Stadium.”
Michael and Kerry Berry have owned The Chicken Shack since 1997. They currently offer drive-up and curbside service six days a week.
But their passion is giving back to the community.
They donate all of their leftover food to missions and ministries who in turn feed the homeless.
“Well, it’s better that someone eats the food instead of it going into the trash can at night," Michael Berry said. "I called Annaville Baptist Church and they told me they have a ministry, so we started contributing about six or seven years ago.”
Richard G. Smith, coordinator of the Missions and Ministries, said the gifts are appreciated.
“Many people are down to their last meal and there’s not a lot of programs and ministries that go out on the street and feed," Smith said. "So they are looking for a meal and we are able to provide them through a big blessing of The Chicken Shack.”
Saturday is Customer Appreciation Day at the Chicken Shack, as everybody gets a free drink when they purchase a regular dinner.
