CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Fishing is obviously very big here in the Coastal Bend.

In today’s We’re Open report, we highlight a family-owned business which has been taking care of anglers for more than 40 years.

If you like to fish, odds are you know about Roy’s Bait and Tackle on SPID near the causeway.

They have been at their current location since 1985 but it goes much further than that.

It all began in 1973 when Roy Guerra started selling fishing rods out of his home.

It would lead to this amazing 19,000 square-foot super store.

Roy Guerra still comes in occasionally, but his son, Rocky, pretty much runs the show now.

And since fishing for food is considered essential, Roy’s Bait and Tackle remains open

“Our customers are glad we are still open along with businesses that are part of the outdoor activities," Rocky Guerra said. "It really helps people not go crazy inside the house.”

These are obviously really hard times for a lot of people, but here at Roy’s. they are doing all they can to take care of their employees.

“We are truly blessed that we are able to stay open and keep all of our employees on staff," Rocky Guerra said. "And even the employees that didn’t make it and had to stay open, we are taking care of them and keeping them on staff.”

Social distancing can certainly be practiced while fishing, especially when some of our beaches re-open on Monday. And don’t forget your fishing mask.

“We love the community, we appreciate them and we want to make sure everyone is safe and practicing social distancing," Rocky Guerra said. "It's been an enjoyment to be here.”

Roy's Bait & Tackle also looks forward to giving back to the community in a big way when charity fishing tournaments are allowed to resume again.
