CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Today’s We’re Open segment takes us to Gill’s Garden Center Plus Landscaping.

Spring is prime planting season for a variety of reasons. But with circumstances the way they are now, spring planting has taken a different direction.

Gill's Garden Center Plus Landscaping, 2810 Airline Road, is here to help.

Sally and James Gill started their own landscaping business 42 years ago.

But it quickly developed into a nursery as well.

With so many people avoiding grocery stores, they are seeing a lot of new interest in veggie gardening. The Gills say right now is the best time to plant

“We have a lot of okra and squash and those are two good things that are easy to grow," said gardening specialist Jesse Jenkins of Gill's. "You can get a really good harvest from them.

"But the biggest thing in Corpus, if you are going to grow veggies, the soil is tough here. If you have ever tried to put a shovel into it, it’s clay and very hard to dig.

"You want to condition your soil with compost which we have plenty here. But that’s the main thing, we teach people to condition their soil.”

Gill's has been doing it for appreciative Coastal Benders for years and there's still open when we all need them.
