CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — After Friday's tragedy involving fallen police officer Alan McCollum and injured police officer Michael Love, Mayor Joe McComb had some words for the community.
"We lost a wonderful public servant because of a tragic accident and if the public can do anything it's one, quit drinking and getting behind the automobile steering wheel," McComb said.
Police say the man who hit the two officers during a traffic stop Friday night, is 26-year-old Brandon Portillo.
He is being charged with intoxication manslaughter, intoxication assault with injuries, and driving with a suspended license.
His bail is currently set at $1.5 million.
The community has come together as it has provided funding on GoFundMe accounts forMcCollum and Love.
There is also a memorial set up at the Corpus Christi Police Department Headquarters in honor of officer McCollum.
