GROESBECK, Texas — It was a somber scene today as family, friends and colleagues from across the state said goodbye to DPS Trooper Chad Walker.
A memorial service was held at Groesbeck High School, just outside Mexia where Walker was shot during a traffic stop last month.
The procession then made its way to the cemetery where he was laid to rest.
Longtime friends of Walker’s within the Groesbeck Fire Department shared stories of the fallen trooper.
One thing that flowed through every story was Walker’s dedication to protect and serve.
“It doesn't matter who you were, Chad cared about you as a person,” said Chaplain John Carabin of the Groesbeck Fire Department. “That’s because he was a good man and Chad was a child of god.”
Walker's first assignment as a DPS trooper was in Corpus Christi. He leaves behind a wife and four children. He was 38 years old.

Two huge flags are flying along South Padre Island Drive in honor of Walker.
The giant U.S. and Texas flags are flying in front of the TxDOT building and the old DPS headquarters on SPID near Greenwood.
The flags are part of a tribute organized in part by Barry Crane and Heavy Haul and C.C. Wrecker Service.
