EMERGENCY SUPPLIES SALES TAX HOLIDAY
This weekend is the official 2019 Emergency Preparation Supplies Sales Tax Holiday; a whole list of products associated with emergency preparedness will not have a sales tax.
According to the Texas Comptroller office, the holiday lasts from Saturday morning until midnight Monday for Texas residents looking to get some emergency preparedness gear, tax-free.
Here is a breakdown of what you can buy in order to receive the tax exemption:
- Portable Generators less than $3,000
- Emergency Ladders and Hurricane Shutters less than $300
- Axes, certain batteries, can openers (nonelectric), carbon monoxide detectors, coolers and ice chests for food storage – nonelectric, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, fuel containers, ground anchor systems and tie-down kits, hatchets, ice products – reusable and artificial, candles, flashlights, lanterns, mobile telephone batteries, mobile telephone chargers, portable self-powered radios including two-way and weather band radios, smoke detectors, tarps and other plastic sheeting. All these products must be under $75 each to qualify for the exemption.
There is no limit as to the number of items someone can claim the exemption on, and there is no need to issue an exemption certificate to claim the exemption.
There are a few items that seem like they might be covered, but are not. A list of those items can be found at the comptroller’s website, along with additional information about the tax-free day.
