14 arrested after human smuggling attempt near Freer

Several people were arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents during a suspected smuggling attempt.

14 people were taken into custody after agents spotted a suspected smuggling vehicle on U.S. Highway 59 near Freer on Feb. 15.

Agents saw a white 2014 Dodge Ram pickup pulled over on the side of the road. When agents approached the vehicle, several individuals jumped out and ran into the nearby brush.

Along with apprehending the driver, a U.S. citizen, agents were able to track and apprehend 13 persons in the county illegally in the brush.  The driver and the individuals, eight from Guatemala and five from Mexico, were taking into custody by Homeland Security Investigations to be processed accordingly.
