(KTEN) Thanks to a new Texas law high school students are not just learning things like math and science, but how to interact with police.
Starting this year, in order for high school students to get a diploma they will need to watch a video which highlights what to do when they are pulled over.
Although this isn’t a math test or an essay, both schools and officers are saying this course is just as valuable.
“It’s shocking. I don’t know how to handle it and living it for the first time, it’s weird and scary,” says Dominic Haden, a Denison High School Junior.
For teenage drivers chances are not everyone knows the do’s and don’ts of what to do.
“I’ve had friends drive off, and they just weren’t educated,” Haden says.
The state is taking this knowledge from the streets to the schools, giving freshmen mandatory training on how to interact with cops.
“It’s important to know because the teenagers are young and don’t have life experiences yet and its good education for them,” said Lieutenant Mike Eppler with the Denison Police Department.
