Two formers Astros players died in a car crash following a winter ball game in Venezuela Thursday, a spokesperson for their Venezuelan team, Cardenales de Lara, confirmed.
Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo were en route to the city where they were planning to play their next game Friday when the accident happened.
Venezuelan authorities said their car went to the opposite side of the road while trying to avoid a sliding rock, ESPN reports.
Valbuena was a critical piece of the 2015 Astros Wild Card team. He played 11 seasons in the majors. His final two season were with the Los Angeles Angels.
Castillo played in the majors from 2004 until 2008. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants and the Houston Astros.
Valbuena was 33. Castillo was 37.
