CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Texas game wardens say they expect many local residents to take part in the 2020 hunting season.
Officers said hunting can lead to many dangers, and that it’s best to stay prepared and safely protect yourself and others.
So, before you decide to camp out at your favorite hunting spot, they want you to remember gun safety first.
“Treat every firearm as it’s loaded, keep your finger off the trigger until you're ready to shoot, know what you’re shooting in the background and beyond, and just know your firearm if your fire has been loaded and when you’re ready to use it,”said Capt. Ben Baker, a Texas Parks & Wildlife game warden.
Baker said hunters with guns do not want to think carelessly when out in the field.
“Once it leaves the firearm, it’s done, you got to deal with the consequences with whatever actions you took so firearm safety is extremely important,” he said.
According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the most popular hunting season for Nueces County hunters is dove and duck season. Baker said another helpful tip is to keep a close eye on what mother nature will bring.
“Just making sure everyone watches the weather; watch the waves when they do and if burned out, don’t go -- there will be another day to duck hunt, there will be another day to have fun," Baker said. "There's no need to put your life and your family's life in jeopardy.” .
Also, the Jim Wells County Sheriff’s County office advises that when you are hunting to make sure your vehicle remains locked and make sure your firearms are out of sight.
Firearm owners need to have a copy of the serial number and to make sure their weapons are stored in a safe place. Keeping this advice will help hunters not become a target for burglars.
