SINTON, Texas — Steel Dynamics is looking to hire several hundred workers for a range of duties for its Southwest-Sinton Division following a $1.9 billion investment in the area.
San Patricio County Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Foster Edwards said, in addition to potentially bringing single-family housing and apartment complexes into the area, Steel Dynamics’ hiring push has the capability to improve Sinton’s economy.
“It’s going to be a tremendously good thing really for the entire Coastal Bend,” Edwards said. “There’s going to be so many different things that happen because all of a sudden you’ve got this tremendous investment with a tremendously good company that has come to a place where that hasn’t happened before. It’s really going to change Sinton.”
The “Open Application Day” is set for Saturday, Aug. 15th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and again on Sunday, Aug. 16 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Sinton Community Center.
Glenn Pushis, senior vice president of special projects for the the Fort Wayne, Indiana-based company, said the company is looking to hire those with college degrees, as well as those with a high-school diploma or GED.
“From engineers to construction workers, to operations folks, office folks across the board,” he said. “So really, qualifications are just bring your experience — any education you have — fill out that application, and then we’ll start to prioritize those applications on our needs and start from that group of applicants we’ll start manning the facility.”
Currently, the the company has 70 employees, not counting those who are currently contracted with the development of the facility that began in mid-January of this year.
“By the end of the year we plan to be within 300-350,” Pushis said. “By next summer, when we start up, we should close to 700 total employees.”
Pushis also said the facility could have close to 1,000 workers within the next two to three years.
Depending on qualifications, those hired for Steel Dynamics could make anywhere from $45,000-$100,000.
