Shelter dogs transported to better lives

ROBSTOWN, Texas — Thousands of dogs are sent to animal shelters every year.

In the Coastal Bend, volunteers are doing what they can to make sure these dogs are sent to loving homes.

Lisa Bockholt, volunteer coordinator for Nueces County and Kingsville Animal Shelter, says volunteers are always needed, from foster homes to transporters.

And on Saturday morning at the Nueces County Airport in Robstown, two chocolate Labrador Retrievers were put on a small plane to be transported to Athens, Texas.

They were cared for at the Kingsville Animal Shelter and were tagged by the Chicagoland Lab Rescue.

With help from Pilots n Paws, the two dogs will be staying with fosters families in Athens and eventually find forever homes.

Bockholt says Saturday's delivery is one of the hundreds of transports that are made in the Coastal Bend every year.

"Several times a week, our volunteers are driving dogs from shelters to local vets or meeting rescues, or taking them to fosters," Bockholt said. "So there's a lot of the smaller local transports and I would say easily 100 to 150 just from this year alone,"
