CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend is getting ready to host its Shield of Hope fundraiser.
However, due to concerns about the pandemic, the non-profit organizaton has decided to host the event virtually.
Capt. Patrick Gesner, the commanding officer of the Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend, says this will be the first year having the fundraiser virtuallly. But the funds raised are needed to help those who are in need in the community.
“The funds go to help us with COVID assistance," Gesner said. "They help to go with people wanting to avoid homelessness if they’re falling behind on their mortgage or rent or utility bills. It helps to provide for that also. And if they have become homeless it helps provides for their shelter and for the food and for our food pantries."
Workers also say you don’t have to be a resident of the city to participate in the virtual fundraiser and auction. The event will benefit those those who also may need some assistance during the coronavirus health crisis.
“All these funds will go to help us," Gesner said. "They are desperately needed, especially in this season of coronavirus where we had a lot more expense than normal."
