PORTLAND, Texas — A 22-year-old man is behind bars after police say he shot a 6-year-old Portland girl in the cheek.
Portland Police Chief Mark Cory said Ryan Hopson got into an argument with his girlfriend at her home at the Portland Mobile and R.V. Park on Buddy Ganem Drive late Saturday night. He then went to his trailer at the same mobile-home park.
Cory said that at about 11:30 a.m. the next day, Hopson went back to his girlfriend's trailer armed with a rifle and fired rounds at the girlfriend's father. Bullets reportedly hit the girlfriend's home, and one hit the girl's cheek.
She was taken to Driscoll Children's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Hopson fled the scene but was later captured in the mobile-home park by a Portland police officer.
Hopson was arrested and charged with aggravated assault family violence with a weapon, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. All are felony charges.
Hopson remains in the San Patricio County Jail on a $210,000 bond.
The young victim is expected to recover.
