PORTLAND, Texas — A 17-year-old young man is facing criminal charges after he allegedly abused an animal.

Portland Police Department said they arrested 17-year-old Kaleem Gholsby on Monday.

Investigators said they were made aware of a video on social media allegedly showing Gholsby, a Gregory-Portland High School football player, abusing an animal.

Gholsby was charged with cruelty of a non-livestock animal, which is a 3rd degree felony.

Investigator said if anyone has any further information on this case or others like it, please call the Portland police department investigations department at (361) 777-4444.

A G-PISD news release Monday states the district is aware of the allegations, but will not be commenting on potential disciplinary actions. It did state, however, that it does not condone animal abuse.

"We understand the content of this video is disturbing, and has been shared among students," the statement reads. "We ask that our parents and families talk to your students, and reach out to your School Counselors if any are in need of support or services. Contact information can be found at www.g-pisd.org/supportservices [g-pisd.org]."

The release also states that the video was made over the weekend, and that it was not taken on school property.
