CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi was locked down Wednesday morning in response to an employee making verbal threats.
A message posted to its Facebook page Wednesday afternoon said base’s gates were closed by base commanding officer Capt. Christopher Jason “in the interest of everyone’s safety.”
Early reports said an armed suspect on base prompted the shelter in place order, with the Department of Defense sending a message to base personnel that reads: “A possible dangerous situation has been reported in building 8, Test Cell area. RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. If you are near the location, escape if possible, prepare to defend yourself swiftly and violently. All other areas lockdown.”
The incident took place before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, near the Corpus Christi Army Depot’s Building 8.
The shelter-in-place order also caused delays at the Flour Bluff entrance as base personnel and employees tried to arrive for work.
Meanwhile, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi issued a Code Blue, alerting students to the situation nearby, but did not issue a lock down.
This is the third security incident at NAS-Corpus Christi this year.
In February, base security shot and killed 37-year-old Doniel King after he crashed into a security barrier at the Ocean Drive entrance to NAS-Corpus Christi, and in October, another intruder crashed a stolen truck through the same gate.
Brian Robinson, 47, managed to get on base, armed with a gun.
He surrendered and now faces up to 10 years in prison.
