CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A man who attacked his pregnant ex-girlfriend by stomping on her stomach is heading to prison.

Michael Sotelo, 21, was arrested in June 2018 and charged with attempted capital murder of an unborn child, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault against a family member.

Sotelo accepted a plea deal Sept. 6 in which the Nueces County District Attorney's Office dropped the attempted capital murder and aggravated assault charges. In turn, Sotelo pleaded guilty to a charge of assault against a family member and was sentenced to five years in prison. The 15 months he has already served is prison will be deducted from his sentence, according to online court records.

According to a police report, Sotelo became enraged in 2018 after his ex-girlfriend told him she was pregnant and attacked her. Sotelo reportedly began stomping on her stomach and chest, stating he didn't want her baby.

According to prosecutor Stephen Giovannini, the baby was born early but is doing fine.
