CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi police confirmed early Sunday evening that the victim of Sunday's stabbing at the Walmart on U.S. Highway 77 in Calallen has died.
Several sources indicate the deceased person is Gabriel Cooley, a kicker on the Calallen football team.
Calallen football coach Phil Danaher said the Wildcats have dedicated the 2020 season to Cooley's memory. Danaher said students will gather to remember him at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Calallen High School football field.
The man who stabbed the victim has been arrested, police said.
Police say it is unclear if the two parties knew each other who were involved in the stabbing. Police said the victim was in his late teens and the other person was either in his late teens or early 20s.
Police say they are unsure what caused the disagreement that led to the stabbing.
The victim was sent to Spohn Shoreline Hospital with his wounds after the incident, which occurred at 2:44 p.m.
Witnesses said the incident took place in the food department of the store.
The incident caused police to clear the store and place the facility into lockdown afterwards.
The store cleared as most of the other shoppers fled from the scene, witnesses said.
