The man who was found dead was identified by San Patricio County Sheriff Oscar Rivera as 45-year-old Angel Canals.
UPDATE (5:30 p.m.):
San Patricio County Sheriff Oscar Rivera said a man in the standoff was found dead inside a home in Mathis after officials were able to enter the residence.
He said at about 4 a.m. Tuesday, the SPCSO received a call from the Mathis Police Department that a woman claimed she was kidnapped by a man in Mathis.
"She was able to break loose and was telling law enforcement that he wanted to die by suicide by cop," Rivera said.
He added the man was believed to have "several warrants."
At 9:30 a.m., Mathis PD found the man and chased him into an open field near County Road 704.
The man then broke into a home in the field, Rivera said, where an older man lived. He said the older man was able to get out of the home, unharmed.
The suspect then barricaded himself with furniture inside a bedroom.
"Our tactical response team at the sheriff's office went over there to speak and negotiate with him and he said he had a gun and he had barricaded the door," Rivera said. "And we were out there for the longest time and then he wouldn't talk to us anymore."
At about 4 p.m., law enforcement broke some windows and the man didn't respond, Rivera said. Officers then entered the home, and found the man had killed himself.
