CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Texas law enforcement officials are reminding the public that it is illegal in Texas to leave an animal outside during severe weather.

After news of a gruesome discovery in East Texas of six puppies that were found frozen to death Friday morning, Texas law enforcement officials are getting the word out that it is illegal to leave an animal outside when bad weather strikes.

According to Houston County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, that law extends into the dog days of summer.

Investigators said animal cruelty is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail, a fine of up to $4,000, or both jail time and a fine.
