CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A group of first responders were in the Las Colonias neighborhood on Friday evening warning residents about the threat of what is currently Tropical Storm Hanna, and its potential to dump a lot of heavy rain in the area.
The neighborhood is near Saratoga and Greenwood, and sees major flooding anytime a big rain event comes through.
CCPD Sr. Ofc. Lolo Cantu and a dozen other officers went door-to-door with pamphlets and information to let residents know about what to expect this weekend.
“We’ve been out here before where people can’t get in and out and they’re stuck,” she said. “We don’t want that to happen again.”
Neighbors say law enforcement make their rounds in the area before every big storm.
“It’s the same process,” said Lisa Teel, who's lived in the neighborhood for three years. “They come through and tell us to prepare for it.”
Neighbors blame the flooding problems on debris that clutters the drains near La Volla Creek. Improvements could be coming soon, however. The General Land Office has given the city a $7.2 million grant to build a retention pond nearby. City Council is expected to vote on the grant during their next council meeting.
In the meantime, long-time residents like Pedro Nava are making their last-minute preparations ahead of the storm, like securing all the items in the yard.
“Other than that, we’re getting prepared for it,” said Nava. “Enough water and enough gas, for our vehicles.”
