One of the most iconic moments in American history will be relived and discussed at ceremonies here later this week.

Frank Garcia, the junior vice commandant for the Marine Corps League No. 430, will meet with KRIS 6 Meteorologist Maclovio Perez during the KRIS 6 News at Noon show to discuss the Iwo Jima Ceremony happening Saturday at Sherrill Park.

The Iwo Jima ceremony will remember those valiant soldiers who participate in the Battle of Iwo Jima, which took place from Feb. 19 through March 26, 1945. It was a turning point in World War II as the United States Marine Corpus and Navy landed on and eventually captured the island from the Imperial Japanese Army.

And Joe Rosenthal’s Associated Press photograph of the raising of the U.S. flag on the top of Mount Suribachi by six U.S. Marines became the iconic image of the battle and the American war effort in the Pacific.

Col. Bret Rittersby will be the guest speaker. Ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the park, 222 S. Shoreline Blvd.
