CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A parent at Gloria Hicks Elementary School wants answers after her son lost part of a finger at school Tuesday, in what she calls a bullying incident.
CCISD Police Chief Kirby Warnke says the report he’s seen calls the incident an accident, but the boy's mother says what happened was no accident.
“My son's fingertip fell off getting squashed by the door in the restroom, that a kicked the door on his finger and it got squashed and fell off,” said Krystal Gluth.
Gluth’s son, 7-year-old Jordan Mejares is a 2nd grader at Gloria Hicks Elementary. He told his mother that while he was trying to open the restroom door, an older boy kicked it from.
“I said "so he did it on purpose?" And he said "yes, because he told me 'ha-ha'",” said Gluth.
The first school employee Gluth spoke to was the nurse, whose account was the same as her son's. Gluth says that when she called the school office for more information, the assistant principal gave a much different account of the incident.
“She told me that she had already looked at videos and that he kicked the door open to help my son, which made no sense,” said Gluth. “If you're opening the door to the restroom and coming out of the restroom, it goes the same way”
Gluth says the Assistant Principal also changed her story.
“She also told me "he was in the restroom, but he should not have been in that hallway either",”
said Gluth. “So now she's saying it's my son's fault for going in to a different restroom in a different hallway?”
Gluth is out of town training for work. She says it hurts she can't be with her son, and that she believes him.
“This is a 7-year-old,”: said Gluth. “He's not going to lie about things that are happening and why it happened.”
CCISD didn't respond to requests for interviews Wednesday, but Hicks Elementary sent a letter to parents today saying the investigation is ongoing. As for Jordan, doctors weren't able to reattach the fingertip. His mother says they'll have to wait and see if it grows back, which could take 7-10 weeks.
