Former Calallen ISD teacher found guilty in child abuse case, sentenced to 35 years in prison

Joseph Sandoval, a former Calallen Independent School District teacher, was sentenced to 35 years in prison on March 9.

A jury deliberated Wednesday morning as Sandoval faced 25 to 99 years in prison, or a life sentence for being convicted of continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14.

According to court officials, Judge Sandra Watts with the 117th district sentenced Joseph Sandoval just after 12 p.m.

Court officials say victim impact statements were read in the courtroom after the sentencing.

Sandoval has been taken into custody and is pending transfer to a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility.

A former Calallen ISD teacher is now waiting to learn his punishment after he was found guilty on Tuesday of one count of continuous sexual assault of a child under the age of 14; a first degree felony.

40-year-old Joseph M. Sandoval was arrested by U.S. Marshals back in November of 2019. Sandoval worked as a teacher for Calallen ISD in 2018.

The punishment phase in his trial will begin on Wednesday morning. A jury will be deciding his punishment.
