Firefighters keep apartment fire from spreading

A fire broke out at the Four Winds Apartments on Carroll Lane near Weber Road shortly before 3 p.m. Monday.

Battalion Chief Jackie Burrows said residents and passersby saw smoke coming from a second-floor apartment and called it in.

The engine had just finished responding to a nearby call, she said, and was able to reach the Four Winds incident within two minutes. The fire was out within 10 minutes of the call.

The fire was contained to one apartment, and the apartment was vacant at the time.

Burrows said neighbors told firefighters they thought the apartment's resident had moved in recently. She said there was very little furniture in the apartment, allowing firefighters to put the fire out "rather quickly," and with no injuries.

"We were very fortunate that everyone got out," she said. "I don't know if a lot of people are out, maybe, today. It's beautiful outside, so the residents that were here made their way outside, but a lot of people were gone."

The apartment complex manager was on-scene, and a fire investigator was en route to the scene.
