PADRE ISLAND, Texas — Talk about the Park Road 22 Water Exchange Bridge has been an Island discussion for over a decade. The bridge will connect Lake Padre and the canals on the opposite side of Park Road 22.

Assistant City Manager Keith Selman says it will also provide public access across the road.

"Well, right now there's not good pedestrian access nor golf cart access between the east and west sides of Park Road 22," says Selman. "This project will provide that."

Selman also says that the project will be funded from different bond projects from over the years as well as obtaining $4 million from Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 2.

The canal will be 5500 feet, with a 14-foot clearance for boats.

Selman says the bidding process has just begun.

"The developer adjacent to the property is under contract to build the canals," he said. "Once we got notification that he was under contract, we put it out to be bid. It is out to bid now, we look to open those bids the middle of next month."

The bidding date will be on Aug. 21, Selman believes construction could start by the fall of 2019.
