CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A city ordinance that already allows golf carts in certain areas could soon be modified.

It would change to allow electric vehicles and all-terrain vehicles on city streets in North Padre Island, Mustang Island and North Beach.

The proposal is in response to a new law passed by state lawmakers that green-lights ATVs and electric vehicles as an allowable mode of transportation.

A first vote on the ordinance change is set for tomorrow.

“The big majority of the community would like to see this,” District 4 Councilman Greg Smith said. “Now, there are some people that are concerned about having the faster vehicles on there. There are some safety concerns with it.”

If the ordinance passes tomorrow's vote, a second vote would be held on Nov. 19.

Drivers would have to follow certain rules -- including a posted speed limit of no more than 35 mph and operating during daytime hours only.
