The Corpus Christi Police Department is asking residents to shelter in place, and traffic is being diverted near Up River Road and McBride Lane after a pipe explosion at a nearby refinery.

According to the CCPD, crews are working a gas line explosion at Up River Rd and McBride Ln., and multiple lanes of traffic have been shut down.

"It was a gas line leak. It was not a city line. It was on the petrochemical side," said Chief Billy Belyeu of the Corpus Christi Fire Department.

Officials say a 16-inch line ruptured at a local refinery around 2:44 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

"It hasn't been identified who the line belongs to yet. That may take a while," added Chief Belyeu.

Crews were undergoing some maintenance on that line that caused the rupture. Two workers were injured as a result of Thursday's explosion.

Chief Belyeu says minimal evacuations have been ordered, mainly just three homes in the Donna Park neighborhood. Other families in the area have chosen to self-evacuate while other residents are sheltering in place.
