ROBSTOWN, Texas — There's been a delay in the construction of the County Road 36 bridge.
The small bridge is located between the Martin Marietta Material Yard and the Flatiron Dragados Construction Yard, just south of Robstown, and has been closed since May.
Homeowners in the area believe large work trucks damaged the bridge. Work on that bridge was supposed to be complete by mid-November.
Robstown City Manager Herman Rodriguez said the city contacted the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to have the bridge repaired under the emergency bridge replacement program. He was told it would take three years to get the money to make the necessary fixes.
So he contacted Nueces County Commissioner John Marez, Nueces Co. Drainage District No. 2 officials and Flatiron Dragados. Flatiron Dragados donated pieces for the new bridge, but the pieces didn't fit, so the company is in the process of re-engineering new pieces.
The city is hoping to have those pieces soon.
"The cost of the bridge under the (TxDOT) program could have been up to $400M, but thanks to all involved, the cost to the City of Robstown is near $50,000," Rodriguez said. "The timing is not the best, but ... when complete, (it) will be way safer than anything there before."
