CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coastal Bend Labor Council honored local labor groups during its annual Labor Day Breakfast this morning.
It held its annual event at its facilities on the 1200 block South Staples Street. It was filled with union leaders, elected officials and other politicians.
This morning, they celebrated the 125th anniversary of the national holiday and kicked off their election cycle.
Organizers said they plan to educate union members about the importance of voting and the changes expected on the 2020 ballot. Retired Texas AFL-CIO President Becky Moeller said this will be an educational year, not a political year.
"People are paying attention to what's happening in the country. They are paying attention to what's going wrong in this country and what's going right in this country and unfortunately, there's a lot going wrong and I think people are paying attention," Moeller said, "They're getting involved and beginning to advocate for themselves."
Moeller said everyone should pay attention to what's going on and register to vote.
"Educate yourself on the laws that have changed recently and feel free to join us. If you see something on Facebook for the labor council, we're a welcoming group," Moeller said.
