The City of Corpus Christi is taking steps towards creating a new composting program.

On Thursday, crews with the city's solid waste department were given a grinder demonstration at the J.C. Elliott Transfer Station.

The city was shown what the grinder can do and how it works.

Grinders take brush and turn it into mulch.

David Lehfeldt the Director Solid Waste Services says "two thirds of what we throw away is organic material that can be composted. So this program is going to allow us to keep a lot of material over of the landfill, which is going to extend the life of the landfill. That's a good thing."

Two more demonstrations will take place over the next couple of weeks.

The next demonstration will take place September 16th and the final demonstration is scheduled for September 24th.

The program is still in the early stages of planning.

City officials say the new program will provide new jobs and save the city money.
