CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — City council members had a busy afternoon at this Tuesday’s regularly scheduled city council meeting. Millions of dollars worth of contracts and construction projects were approved across the city.
Here’s which projects were approved and what to expect from the city moving forward.
Increased funding for Cole Park Pier
The city states, “the appropriation of additional funds from the Type B Corporation will provide full funding for the reconstruction of Cole Park Pier with significantly improved public amenities.”
The old Cole Park Pier is set to be demolished in February, and the demolition will take six weeks.

Six Points Intersection Construction
The City Council approved a $3.2 million dollar construction contract for the reconstruction of the Six Point Intersection. The city said this includes “10th Street from Ayers Street to Staples Street and the rehabilitation of Ayers Street from 10th Street to Six Points Intersection”.
They also said funding would come from “FY 2021 funding available from the Streets Bond 2016, storm water, wastewater, and water funds.”
The project is scheduled to last 10 months, with construction anticipated to begin March 2021.

Engineering Design Services Contract for La Volla Creek Drainage Improvement
$2.3 million was approved for an engineering design contract to Lockwood, Andrews, and Newman, Inc. This contract will include the engineering design of a “stormwater detention pond and new box culverts crossing North Padre Island Drive at the Airport Tributary.”
There has been frequent flooding in the area, affecting the Las Colonias neighborhood. This drainage improvement is hoped to alleviate the issue.

Residential Recycling
A new contract between the City of Corpus Christi and Republic Services was approved, with the old contract set to expire at the end of the month. The new contract is approved for three years with the option for three, three-year extensions.
Republic Services operates Corpus Christi’s single stream Recycling Sorting Center, which means there is no need to separate different recycling materials such as paper, plastic, and aluminum because the center does it for you.
