CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Every student at Calk-Wilson Elementary was given a priceless gift today.
They received the gift of literacy.
More than 1,000 books were passed out at the school's "magic of reading" event.
The school partnered with State Rep. Todd Hunter (R-Corpus Christi) and Corpus Christi City Council member Paulette Guajardo to help raise more than $5,000 to buy those books.
“They were just absolutely overjoyed that they have a book of their very own,” Calk-Wilson principal Sheila Thomas said. “It doesn't stay here at school, it goes to their house, so we are promoting reading for every single child.”
Teachers were able to hand-pick each book and write a personalized message inside for their students.
